How did we get here?
Katherine “Kat” Cepeda is the founder and owner of Bohío Living and Bohío Botanicals. Kat has worked as an educator and social worker, primarily in New York City; she has also taught in the tri-state area and the Dominican Republic. After being diagnosed with alopecia, she sought the consultation of physicians. Wary of the potential side effects of steroids being administered, she researched natural remedies, leading her to create herbal blends and topical treatments that had noticeable effects on her physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Kat began sharing these homemade remedies with friends and family; thus, Bohío Living was born. Kat is currently an educator and herbalist whose work within Bohío Living includes specific focuses on mental wellness and social-emotional learning.
Ancestral Healing
Kat’s Caribbean ancestry is at the root of her herbal blends and methodology. Her mother, Milagros, is the namesake of the popular “La Milagrosa” tea in the shop and has passed down family recipes. Kat’s academic and experiential research of the history and people of Ayiti (Haiti/Dominican Republic) has deepened her connection to her own and the island’s Taino and African ancestry. Bohío is a Taino word meaning “home” or “dwelling.” This symbolism drives the overall mission of Bohío Living as we provide products and resources that support healing and coming home to oneself. Presently, through Bohío Living and Bohío Botanicals, Kat continues to build on the knowledge, wisdom, and experiences of her ancestors in her mission to create community by cultivating spaces of holistic healing.
All of our products are made from certified organic, pesticide-free herbs and ingredients that have been thoroughly researched and tested. Our workshops and retreats focus on healing from trauma through a wide variety of spiritually grounding practices that include yoga, meditation, and reflection. Workshop attendees are also provided the opportunity to create herbal blends and infusions.
